Crowns are cap-like restorations that are used to treat teeth that are damaged and require an aesthetic makeover. They have been used by dentists for a long time now and serve several purposes. The advantage of getting crowns is that they not only improve the aesthetics, but also the functionality of the teeth.
If you, or anyone you know, have got a traditional crown done, you would have an idea as to how long the procedure would be. The dentist would initially screen your teeth and take multiple molds of the tooth that would receive the crown. Dental scans and X-rays would also be taken to determine its shape and dimensions.
All this data will be sent to a dental laboratory where the dental crown will be designed and fabricated. During this time, you will have to wear a temporary crown until the permanent restoration is ready. When the permanent crown is finished, it will be placed on the tooth and checked for perfect fit. Corrections will be made to it several times before firmly bonding it.
When it comes to CEREC crowns, the procedure would last no more than a few hours. The dentist would scan your teeth with a tool that is connected to the software. A 3D model of your teeth will be created by using Computer-aided Design/ Computer-aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), where you can get an idea of how your teeth will look after the crown is done.
The data will be input to the milling machine where the tool would mill out the crown from a piece of dental grade ceramic. The crown will be taken out and polished to match the texture and shade of the natural enamel. It will then be permanently bonded to the tooth with the help of dental adhesives. All this can be done within a day with absolutely no waiting time.
